On May 3, 2013, Daryl Washington was arrested in Phoenix, AZ, and charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal trespass stemming from an incident involving the mother of his child. According to a police report obtained by Broadly, the former couple were arguing after Washington allegedly removed their baby from her home without her permission. During the argument, according to the police report, Washington—while holding the couple's baby—grabbed the woman by the throat and pushed her over the apartment complex's stair railing while choking her.

When Washington let go of her neck, the victim was able to take the baby from him and go inside her apartment. According to the police report, Washington then pushed his way in, took the victim's cell phone, and walked out of the apartment. She then chased him out to his car to retrieve her cell phone; in the parking lot, Washington shoved her to the ground, "causing several injuries, including a broken right clavicle, road rash type of scrapes, bruising, and cuts to her right arm, right hip, and right leg." On the police report, a box was checked off indicating that there was a history of domestic violence between the couple, although no additional information on that history was provided.

At the time of the incident, Washington had already been suspended for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

On March 24, 2014, Washington pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was sentenced to one year of supervised probation and ordered to complete a 36-week domestic-violence and anger-management program.

On May 30, 2014, Washington was suspended without pay for at least one year for again violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, but he remains on the Cardinals' roster. He has not been disciplined for his domestic violence conviction.
