On November 21, 2014, Cox was arrested by the Oktibbeha County, MS police and charged with domestic violence and burglary. He was suspended from the Mississippi State football team indefinitely. Police responded to a reported burglary and found a woman—Cox's girlfriend at the time—with a head injury at the scene. The domestic violence charge was dropped at the victim's request, and Cox pleaded guilty to misdemeanor trespassing and was fined $600.

Cox didn't play in the final three Mississippi State games of the season, which included the Orange Bowl.


In July 2015, the Kansas City Chiefs released rookie Justin Cox one day after he was arrested and charged with burglary of a residence, aggravated domestic assault, and trespassing.
