On February 15, 2014, Atlantic City police arrested Ray Rice and his then-fiancée Janay Palmer at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Four days later, a clip of a casino elevator security video was posted online, showing Rice dragging his unconscious fiancée out of an elevator. On March 27, 2014, Rice was indicted on aggravated assault charges. The next day, he and Palmer were married. The felony assault charge was dropped in exchange for Rice agreeing to court-supervised counseling.

In July 2014, Rice received a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy. On August 28, 2014, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent out a letter to NFL owners and personnel saying he "didn't get it right" with Rice's punishment and subsequently increased the league's penalties for domestic violence.

On September 8, 2014, TMZ released a longer version of the elevator security video, which showed Rice punching Palmer, knocking her unconscious, and dragging her out of the elevator. That same day, the Baltimore Ravens terminated its contract with Rice. Hours later, the NFL suspended Rice from the league indefinitely. Rice appealed the indefinite suspension and was represented by the NFL Players Association's lawyers. On November 28, 2014, Rice won his appeal and was reinstated in the NFL. He has not yet signed with a new team.

Through a press representative, the Rices declined to comment.
