While their musical output has unleashed a wide-breadth of tuneage over their ten years of operation, San Francisco label Dirtybird is known for a couple of simple passions: bass-heavy tech jams, and a fun-loving group of talent who never take themselves too seriously. OK—they also love BBQ food and will occasionally share pizza on stage (we're looking at Justin Martin)."My first exposure to the label was, probably with a lot of people in around 2006, when Vonstroke released those three little beauties—(The Whistler, Who's Afraid of Detroit & Deep Throat)—all of which were so different sounding than anything else coming around at that time, and definitely the birth of a totally new vibe in house music. My first physical encounter was meeting Justin Martin in Ibiza, probably around 2010.""A couple of years ago, VonStroke was playing at Space Ibiza and as usual (the Dirtybird crew roll as a pack) we had a great little team there in support, like Justin [Martin], Ardalan, and J. Phlip. After his set we decided to all pile back to my villa for a sunrise pool. I've never before or since seen so many well-fed bearded hairy men (myself included) in one tiny swimming pool. The villa we were staying in had an old speedboat parked near the pool and we spent most of the day trying to lift it into the pool, which seemed like an excellent idea at the time. Luckily, we failed and gave up, then went back to the bottle of absinthe we found instead.""If I had to be stuck on a desert island with anyone on earth, let alone the Dirtybird crew, it would be Justin Martin. The man with the everlasting smile is one of the funniest blokes there is and just an all around nice guy. He would manage to somehow make entertainment from random things he found lying around the island and you would never be bored."It's a huge honor for me to be on this ten year compilation. I've been a devout fan from day zero and just the spirit and vibe of this label is so so special—officially joining the family is something that means a lot to me. I actually sent a few different tracks to Barclay for this and included this track as a wild card, not expecting him to pick it, but in true unpredictable style, he went for "I Worked Hard For This"."I had been ripping some old vinyl and was working my way through the hip-house section of my records, so obviously when I started making music that week I wanted to make a modern day hip-house beat. I was listening to a load of Fast Eddie and Jungle Brothers stuff and also some newer bits that Marquis Hawkes had done whilst making it. I Played the finished beat to a mate Danny and we came up with an idea based on an old Factory Kids record that Junior Vasquez remixed called "I'm Simeon Dammit" from 1994. Danny is a movie writer so he wrote these amazing lyrics and we called in Matty Pipes to have a go at them the next day. The studio session was mainly me and Danny trying to make Matty act more and more camp and he absolutely nailed it!""Because of the team involved in this label, as artists and behind the scenes, Dirtybird will never rest on one sound and will continue pushing boundaries. They played a huge part in making house music a big thing in America over the last few years and I know they're going to keep giving us great new artists and pushing house music into new realms—in ten years they will be just as relevant as they are now.""I feel like Ardalan & J.Phlip are eternally young and will never age, but surely Kill Frenzy will look the best in ten years as he seriously looks after himself and is built like a Calvin Klein model. Also he doesn't drink or party too hard and the rest of us do… a LOT!"Doorly is on Facebook // Twitter // SoundcloudTrying to get a speedboat in a swimming pool is so something David would do. @DLGarber
As they gear up to celebrate ten years of magic with their latest compilation Dirtybird 10, we got one of the label's most loyal compadres to wax poetic on some of their craziest antics, not to mention allowing us to stream his bumping addition to the LP "I Worked Hard For This (feat. Pipes)." The man we're talking about is LA-via-London-via-Ibiza house honcho Doorly. Blast his new cut above and check below for some of his raunchy tales from life amongst the bootie-bass loving crew.
