You Need to Watch a New Indonesian Film About Love and Loss This Weekend

Both the Academy Awards and the International Women’s Day are still fresh on everybody’s mind—and this weekend, Sinema Femis is celebrating both. On Sunday, the cinema collective is showing Antonia’s Line, directed by Marleen Gorris, the first movie directed by a woman to have won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. This Saturday, Laze is ready to shine on his own when he drops his solo album, Waktu Bicara, at Queen’s Head Kemang, South Jakarta. Sometimes I wonder if a parallel universe really does exist, and if that version of myself is doing much better than I am. Meanwhile, J.K. Simmon’s character in Counterpart is definitely struggling with his “other” self. In the newish thriller TV series, Simmons plays Howard Silk, an average man who has been working at a government agency for 30 years without really knowing what the agency really does. Eventually, he’s told that the agency is responsible for the portal that connects their world to an alternate world, a copy of Silk’s reality that was created by East German scientists in the 1980s. I haven’t shut up about Counterpart since I started it—it’s a little like Westworld, sans the existential bullshit. And Simmon’s acting here is purely unparalleled. So. Good. —Alia Marsha

Sekala Niskala is an Indonesian film about a young girl who is doing all she can to cope with the slow death of her twin brother. It's a gut wrenching film that weaves in reality and imagination so beautifully—it's on you to decide which is which. The film, which was directed by Kamila Andini, was set and shot in Bali, featuring all Balinese actors speaking Bahasa Bali. I thought it's one of those films screened only at festivals, but it’s going to be screened at theaters nationwide starting this weekend.
