De Blasio Blames Trump's Election for Spike in Subway Hate Crimes

Reports of hate crimes on the New York City subway have increased 340 percent.

Below is what happened on Trump's 42nd day in office. You can find out what damage was done every other day so far on the Saddest Calendar on the Internet.

Since the election, media outlets and advocacy groups have reported incident after incident of hate-related violence across the country. This year, New York City's subway has seen the number of hate crimes reported jump 340 percent, according to DNA Info. Yesterday, Mayor Bill de Blasio blamed Donald Trump for the spike.

"There's no question this sudden increase in bias incidents is directly related to the hateful rhetoric we heard during the election season," de Blasio told reporters. "We're trying to do everything we can to show that those who commit acts of hate will suffer the consequences."

As recently reported on Broadly, there have been 1,400 hate crimes reported across the country since the election, according to a database compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and Propublica.

"From our perspective it certainly looks like there have been more hate crimes since the election," Heidi Beirich, who leads the SPLC's Intelligence Project, told Broadly. "About a fifth of the attacks we've collected were done in Trump's name."

And on subways in particular, police told DNAinfo that as of February 28, there have been 22 recorded crimes, a number much larger than the five over the same time period last year. In December 2016, Soha Salama, a Muslim MTA worker from Egypt, was reportedly called a terrorist and shoved down a flight of stairs. Earlier this month, a man was charged for allegedly drawing swastikas and writing statements like "KKK" and "Mexican Go Home" around various subway stations.

"We have zero tolerance for these acts of bigotry, which stand in direct contrast to the values that we New Yorkers represent," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press release. "I applaud the MTA Police Department for their vigilance and actions in this investigation."
