Sorry, but the Met Gala Is Clearly Cursed

It's where Donald and Melania got engaged, among other deeply cursed events.

Everyone knows that the only thing the Met Gala is good for is providing Rihanna looks that make us want to die—in the good way. Though we're excited to see what kind of outfits celebrities will don tonight, we're far more concerned for attendees and what may or may not go down. For you see, the Met Gala is cursed, and we've gathered the proof.

Lena Dunham on Odell Beckham

For those who are lucky enough to not remember, the always trending Lena Dunham caused yet another controversy following the 2016 Met Gala. In her newsletter, Lenny Letter, published a few days after she attended the event, Dunham alleged that Odell Beckham Jr., who did not know Dunham but was seated next to her at the gala, ignored her all night because he was not attracted to her. Her letter read:

I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, ‘That’s a marshmallow. That’s a child. That’s a dog.’ It wasn’t mean — he just seemed confused… The vibe was very much like, ‘Do I want to f— it? Is it wearing a … yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.’ It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, ‘This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.'

The internet did not react well to her claims about Beckham, and criticized her for jumping to conclusions about why he did not speak to her, relying on racist stereotypes, and assuming that he owed her his sexual attraction.

Dunham eventually responded to the social media uproar on Twitter, claiming that her comments were about her “own insecurities as an average-bodied woman at a table of supermodels & athletes.” She then later formally apologized on Instagram.

Hiddleswift Begins…

Unfortunately for the world, Taylor Swift and English actor Tom Hiddleston met at the 2016 Met Gala. What's more, their first meeting was captured on video as the two attempted to do something close to dancing to T.I.’s “Bring’em Out.”

Their fateful Met Gala meeting kicked off an equally cringe-worthy year-long relationship between the two—known as “Hiddleswift”—full of totally-not-forced PDA, paparazzi photos of Hiddleston wearing an “I <3 T.S.” shirt on the beach, and achieving peak white preppiness with matching Polo jackets.

Three months later, the universe decided that a full summer of Hiddleswift was as much as we could take, and the two split. Still, it’s hard to forgive the Met Gala for this one.

That Time There Was a Billion Dollars on an Elevator

This year’s Met Gala marks the fourth anniversary of the night Solange Knowles physically came at Jay-Z in an elevator as a collected Beyonce watched. While technically the incident happened at a 2014 Met Gala after party and not the gala itself, the three wouldn’t have been at the afterparty if not for the gala—all the more proof that the Met Gala is cursed.

As royal families do, the three cleared up their issues very professionally in the aftermath of the incident. “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred [and] acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public," read a statement from the family’s PR rep. On a talk show in 2017, Jay-Z revisited the incident: "We had one disagreement ever. Before and after, we've been cool," he said.

Donald Trump Proposes to Melania

Thanks to the icons who’ve graced the Met Gala red carpet with their head-turning, jaw-dropping looks since 2004 (shout-out Beyoncé and Rihanna), few associate the Met Gala with the engagement of America’s unequivocally the worst president and his former supermodel wife—but that’s where it all went down. In 2004, then 57-year-old Donald Trump proposed to then 33-year-old model Melania Knauss at the Met Gala in 2004.

It was a different time; Trump was simply a creepy reality TV star and businessman and Melania a successful model. In fact, according to CNN, the 2004 Met Gala attendees either hardly noticed or couldn’t be bothered to care about the couple’s engagement. Little did we know the Trumps would soon consume every facet of our news cycle. What a time.

So, light a candle for your faves tonight and pray that they come out unscathed by the Met Gala curse.
