Sci-fi films have long revolved around male heroes, despite the huge female fanbases who flock to the cinema. But the revitalized Star Wars franchise has made women a focus of the movies. Rey (Daisy Ridley) serves as The Force Awaken's Luke Skywalker, and this week's Rogue One revolves around Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a female rebel hunting down the plans for the Death Star.

At the movie's opening at the historic El Capitan Theatre and Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, women showed up dressed as their favorite Star Wars characters. Alexis Gross, a photographer who has captured groups like female Juggalos and Los Angeles's black gay community, attended the opening to shoot portraits of the female Wookies, Jedis, and Rebels lining Hollywood Boulevard. Here are some of our favorite shots.
