How Scared Should You Actually Be for the Supermoon Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse?

What will Sunday's "supermoon," "blood moon" lunar eclipse mean for you? An internationally certified astrologer explains.

There's nothing New Age about astrology: We've been applying meaning to the heavens for all our history. However, this Sunday—September 27, 2015, at 10:50 PM on the East Coast—multiple outlets report that we'll be having a "supermoon," "blood moon," and lunar eclipse in Aries. As any astrologer can tell you, both the "super–" and "blood" parts are brand new.

Let's start with blood moons, partly because they sound cool, and partly because I want to get them out of the way first because they're so stupid. Blood moons are a 2013 invention by Christian pastor John Hagee, whose book Four Blood Moons: Something's About to Change might be about the end of the world, or the return of Jesus, or the sanctity of menstruation—I really don't know, because I haven't been able to bring myself to read it. In any case, as earthandsky.org notes: "The full moon nearly always appears coppery red during a total lunar eclipse. That's because the dispersed light from all the Earth's sunrises and sunsets falls on the face of the moon at mid-eclipse." So, while "blood moon" definitely sounds metal, there's nothing occult about it, really—unless you're in massive credit card debt and your hope is that the world might come to an end soon, thus solving all your problems.

Eclipses are astrologically significant times. They're thought to bring about abrupt endings and sudden new beginnings.

The term "supermoon" was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle (who has a sick website; please visit with the sound on) in 1979. It's basically a new way to say perigee, which means the nearest point in a body's orbit; put in simpler terms, it just refers to when the moon comes really close to the earth. The moon is fastest in perigee, which astrologically speaking makes it very strong. What, exactly, that means varies: In general, It's good. Astronomically, the Moon being closer to earth increases the tides. If you want to be poetic and completely non-scientific, you might say the gravity, or pull, of the circumstances surrounding you are stronger during this time.

Eclipses are astrologically significant times. They're thought to bring about abrupt endings and sudden new beginnings. A full moon is a time of illumination and culmination, but when it's an eclipse, the realizations it brings are somehow more shocking, unexpected, or profound. Partnerships of all kinds will be highlighted during the eclipse this weekend—the Sun is in charming, collaborative Libra, while the Moon will be in independent Aries. Astrologically speaking, this means will be unable to ignore imbalances in relationships any longer. Commitments that mean a lot to us (whether it's with a person or group) could end. Leaving them behind will be difficult, but eclipses often "open a new door" when one closes. Whether you are embracing a new journey or mourning the ending of a relationship, this eclipse will bring a feeling of finality.

Life after an eclipse is totally, completely different.

I like to think of eclipses as bookends: They always bring news or change, and they make you feel like nothing will ever be the same. Eclipses also make us feel like matters are completely out of control, and there's often a sense of destiny or fate when they occur. Life after an eclipse is totally, completely different. Again, with this specific super moon eclipse, that massive change will involve partnership, examining issues around codependency, commitment and/or relationship with self. Giving and taking will be major themes, too.

The signs Aries and Libra ask us to explore (and enjoy) our relationships, to honor ourselves and our needs and to find balance in relationships. I don't know if the "super blood" full lunar eclipse in Aries will have any profound effect on you. However, if you're looking for a reason to spend some time alone, to love yourself, or to spend sometime with someone or a group of people you're excited to partner with, this occasion is an exciting one. Whether you're waiting for judgment day, enjoying astrology and its rich mythology, or experiencing the celestial event through a grounded, scientific lens, on Sunday you'll get to enjoy one of the many wonders of our universe.
