Ivanka Trump told the audience of the RNC last night that her father was champion of women's rights, saying, "As President, my father will change the labor laws that were put into place at a time when women were not a significant portion of the workforce. And he will focus on making quality childcare affordable and accessible for all." Ivanka also stated her father was a champion of equal pay, but according to an investigation by the Boston Globe, Trump's campaign pays women 35 percent less than it pays men.The were more than a few inconsistencies between the man Ivanka described on stage and the man who is currently running for president. Ivanka also said, "Policies that allow women with children to thrive should not be novelties. They should be the norm. Politicians talk about wage equality, but my father has made it a practice at his company throughout his entire career."However, when Trump has previously been asked about his childcare policy, he's evaded the issue."I would love to believe everything that Ivanka Trump said about her dad," says Vivien Labaton, co-founder Make It Work Action, a woman's labor advocacy organization, "but we know from ample statements he's made that virtually nothing of what she said about his support for women, childcare, and equal pay are true."When a Make It Work advocate asked Trump about creating affordable childcare during an event in Iowa in 2015, he responded, "I love children. It's a big subject, darling." Addressing onlookers, Trump added, "She wants to know my thoughts on childcare. Come on, we'll talk for about ten hours."Labaton says Ivanka's speech last night was a strategic move by Trump to attract the women's vote. "They have access to the same polling that we do, which shows these issues are enormously popular among voters," Labaton notes. "Seventy-five percent of voters support making child care affordable and available nationwide, across party lines."Labaton is confident that Ivanka's speech didn't fool anyone. "American voters are really smart, and I'm confident that they will see through Ivanka Trump's statements last night to recognize Donald Trump as who he really is, and that is not a champion of women."
