For nearly 50 years, the LGBT community of New York City has gathered in celebration and protest to march down Fifth Avenue at the end of June. Each year, The NYC Pride March grows with equally colorful spectators and participants alike.The first float leading the march, which is managed by Heritage of Pride, a non-profit that runs all official NYC Pride events, is a special one. Each rider onboard is an honoree, selected for their work as community organizers, allies and activists. This year's honorees included: Denise Chambers, a transgender woman from Trinidad representing Immigration Equality; Melissa Sklarz, Director of Development for the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund; designer Mondo Guerra; and activist Edith "Edie" Windsor.
