These Keanu Reeves Abortion Rights Memes Are Most Excellent, Dude

Dublin graphic designer Linda Kavanagh has raised over 2,000 euros for a pro-choice charity through the power of Keanu Reeves memes.

Ordinarily I'm allergic to people running marathons for good causes—even if it's in support of an abortion rights charity. But Linda Kavanagh, a 37-year-old graphic designer from Ireland, is one fundraiser I can get on board with. She's running the Dublin mini-marathon on June 5 in support of Abortion Support Network, which provides support to Irish and Northern Irish women who are forced to travel abroad for terminations. And for every person who donates, Kavanagh will create a custom Keanu Reeves pro-choice meme.

Kavanagh is so devoted to the cause that she hasn't even run a single kilometer in training for her upcoming race—she's been too busy making Keanu memes instead, and has already raised over 2,000 euros for her charity of choice. When I heard about her campaign, I had to reach out. Because—like her—I love abortion, hate exercise, and adore Keanu Reeves with an unparalleled ardor. And let's not even get me started on how much I love memes! My boyfriend wooed me with memes!

A woman training for a sporting event exclusively by making memes is a woman after my own heart. And how great does Keanu Reeves look as a pro-choice meme? It's almost like his face was designed for conveying uplifting messages about female bodily autonomy. Plus, Kavanagh is inspired by the vaporwave look. Now, there's an aesthetic! Forget millennial pink—truly, these memes are a feast for your eyes and your social conscience.

As it turns out, Kavanagh has form when it comes to pro-choice memes. "Last year I made bespoke Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson memes to fundraise for abortion rights," she explains, "and the year before I did Vin Diesel."

On both occasions, Kavanagh raised thousands of euros for pro-choice charities. Like many of us, Kavanagh is continually inspired by Vin Diesel's uplifting social media presence. "It's actually, like, brilliant. I'm in love with Vin Diesel," she confirms.

I ask Kavanagh why she settled for Keanu Reeves this year, when she could have opted for another hunk of man-flesh, like Mark Wahlberg. "I decided to do Keanu because I feel like he's been a comforting and beautiful presence in our lives for the last 20 years."

(Let's settle in for a brief discussion of underrated 1991 cult classic Point Break.)

"I just watched Point Break last night actually," she says. "It's very enjoyable. I didn't realise the whole female gaze angle before I watched it as a teen. Like, it's really all about the 'hot male bod,' isn't it?"

In particular, I tell Kavanagh, I'm a real fan of her vaporwave styling (an arguably anti-capitalist aesthetic from the early 2010s associated with EDM). "That was my theme this year," she explains of her creative process. And her favourite meme? "Probably the one of him with a caption reading, 'I can be your hero,'" she decides, after some hesitation.

If Kavanagh reaches her fundraising target, she'll even run part of the race. "Normally I just walk the marathon, but if I meet my fundraising goal I'll run a few kilometers, maybe," she muses. "I'm not a very fit person! I'm kind of hoping I don't meet it, in a way. My knees will thank me for it."

The battle for abortion rights in Ireland has been lengthy and fraught—but Kavanagh's optimistic that finally, we're approaching a turning point. "I feel like we're closer than ever to repealing the 8th Amendment [which criminalizes abortion]," Kavanagh says. "We need to deal with this, and it isn't going away. Now's the time to educate people about what the best possible legislation would be for people, ahead of a potential future referendum."

Finally, the million-dollar question: What if Keanu Reeves isn't actually pro-choice? "I know!" she groans. "Wouldn't that be terrible? I've tried looking it up, but I can't see it online. Who knows?"
