What Is Broadly?

From the editor's desk, and by "desk" I mean a coffee table littered with five-hour old nachos that I'm still picking at.

The only thing worse than reading an editor's letter is writing one, so I'm not going to use a bunch of flowery language about some bullshit if I can just get directly to the point, which is that Broadly is a feminist channel.

That's not to say that we won't be objective in our storytelling--in fact, we're dedicated to it. (We talk to everyone from Ann Coulter to the president of the National Abortion Federation to the black riot grrrls that history forgot.) But there are just some things that are patently true, like the fact that women should have the same economic, social, and political rights that men do.

I mean, whatever--it's not even a controversial or edgy thing to say anymore. It's stupid that it ever was. Once a superstar in a sparkly long-sleeved bathing suit slides across a stage in front of a term, that term is officially mainstream.

New media has been a game-changer for feminism--its appeal is palpable and undeniable. We can no longer be told that it's not relevant or that we're just imagining things. If we seem pissy, it's because the women's movement has raised our expectations faster than society has been able to meet them. Part of those expectations includes having our priorities authentically addressed, reported on, and documented.

Now is the time to elevate the coverage of women's interests by telling the stories that matter to us, through in-depth, original reporting and documentary video. We didn't want to hold our breath and wait for general interest outlets to do that. With Broadly, we're just going to do it ourselves.

Thanks for stopping by; I hope you stick around--it would demonstrate your great taste.
